About the Role

Tile House Surgery is looking to recruit a practice nurse, who will work as part of the primary healthcare team, providing personal medical services, in a holistic way, to the patients of the practice whilst upholding a very high standard of nursing care.

The following are the core responsibilities of the practice nurse. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks which will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

  • Assist and perform routine tasks, related to patient care, as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.
  • Perform holistic assessment of patients attending for cervical smear tests and carry out cervical smear tests as required – using liquid based cytology. Training can be given.
  • Undertake wound management and implement wound care, in line with current evidence-based guidelines.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Run well-person clinics and health promotion programmes, by providing assessment and lifestyle advice on diet, smoking, alcohol intake and exercise, as required by the practice.
  • Offer travel health vaccines as per NHS guidelines and available vaccines.
  • Perform ECGs as required.
  • Carry out chronic disease management clinics, both face-to-face and via telephone.
  • Other clinics as may be required, from time to time, by the practice, including review of electronic patient questionnaires and data.
  • Offer advice about childhood and adult vaccinations, carry out vaccinations and ensure they are administered under patient group directives. As part of this approach to be able to recognise and manage anaphylaxis according to current guidelines.
  • Carry out LD, mental health and dementia reviews.
  • Participate in the annual 'flu vaccination programme, according to practice policy as well as other vaccination programmes such as shingles and pneumonia.
  • Chaperoning patients and assisting where appropriate when other clinicians are examining patients.
  • Assist GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings. The ability to obtain and document informed consent, either verbal or written.
  • Request pathology tests, urine samples or cultures.
  • Use disposable instruments in accordance with manufacturers and infection control guidelines.
  • Participation in administrative systems and meetings in the practice.
  • Maintain accurate records using the patient’s computer medical record and the recommended read codes and templates.
  • Ensure awareness of statutory and local clinical protection procedures, including systems of referral.
  • Have the ability to recognise signs and symptoms of child abuse and undertake regular child protection training as directed.
  • Be up-to-date with cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and emergency situations according to current guidelines.
  • Undertake any other delegated duties appropriate to the post which you may be requested to perform.
  • Keep a personal development plan, updating and reviewing it as necessary, inline with current NMC re-validation guideline to maintain registration.
  • Maintain annual mandatory e-learning.

About the Candidate

The job-holder will need to be able to demonstrate that they:

  • give a commitment to maintain a high professional standard of nursing care and keep up-to- date with all aspects of nursing care, relevant to the post.
  • have experience within general practice, as a practice nurse, and have undertaken the majority of the duties listed in the job description, or be willing to be trained in them.
  • are a current member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (proof of membership will be required),
  • agree to a DBS check.
  • give a commitment to ensure health and safety requirements and infection control measures are met, and that any lapses are reported to the appropriate persons, in accordance with local protocols.
  • have previously used clinical computer systems, being comfortable and confident in their use, and in particular the TPP SystmOne clinical system, which is used for all patient records. Alternatively, having used a similar system and have a willingness to be trained in this system, if not already a user.
  • have excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • are aware of, and able to maintain, strict confidentiality at all times.
  • have good judgement and common sense.
  • are aware of their own limitations and experience.
  • are able to work as a team player.
  • have good knowledge of Microsoft Office, including use of Word, Excel and Windows.
  • have the ability to self-motivate, organise and prioritise their own workload.
  • maintain a caring approach towards patients and support and help colleagues.
  • are prepared to be flexible with their working hours, being prepared to cover for other staff when they are on holiday or sick, and to work Saturdays as and when required for flu vaccinations or other ad hoc vaccination clinics.
  • have exceptional communication skills.
  • have the ability to work without direct supervision and determine own workload priorities.
  • have confidence in own decision-making abilities.
