About the Role

North Colchester Primary Care Network has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, self-motivated Paramedic to join our team.  This role is offered on a 2 year, fixed term contract, working on a part-time basis, for 25 hours per week.  You will be required to travel between all of the GP practices within our PCN. 

The post-holder will ideally have primary care experience, however the for the right candidate we are happy to support the move from urgent to primary care. Duties would include reviewing patients presenting with minor illness at the surgery and at home visits, whilst also supporting the surgery with other clinical skills such as ECGs, wound dressings and pathology collection and interpretation when required. The ability to be able to triage and prioritise patients via the telephone is also essential.

The main responsibilities of the role include:
  • Urgently respond to referrals and provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment at first point of contact by attending to patients, according to patients’ needs either in the practice or patient homes;
  • Support, and continue the development of, an on-the-day emergency patient service in the practice;
  • Accurately triage and prioritise patients, including in both emergency situations and telephone triage, demonstrating the use of a variety of techniques to elicit the history of an event/illness, including past medical and drug history;
  • Evaluate clinical information from examination and history taking, and initiate appropriate treatment and/or referral;
  • Review the effectiveness of the treatment provided, making changes where necessary to improve patient outcomes;
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in an efficient manner.
The role will offer you the opportunity to build on your experience of working effectively within a multi-disciplinary, healthcare team, as you will work alongside fellow professionals within the practice in support of one another.
About the Candidate
If you are an experienced paramedic wanting a new challenge, we would love to hear from you.  You will have the following skills and experience: 
  • Be a registered paramedic, with current HCPC registration and have a minimum of 2 years post NQP signoff, ideally with some being in primary care;
  • Ideally have a prescribing qualification in addition to having completed a minor illness & injury certificate;
  • Be confident and have excellent communication skills;
  • Work safely and effectively to guidelines;
  • Demonstrate the ability to take a clear and concise history from patients;
  • Demonstrate relevant examination skills and make appropriate treatment choices or referrals to other HCPs based on the history taken and physical examination.
  • Have the ability to make clear decisions with confidence and communicate these effectively;
  • Understanding of the need to work within the parameters of one's own training and capability, according to the Health and Care Professions Council;
  • Experience of autonomous practice working and multi-professional team working;
  • Can demonstrate a broad and sound knowledge of complex and common conditions in primary care in both adults and children.
