About the Role
Newport Pagnell Medical Centre has an opportunity for a prescription clerk/pharmacy assistant to join our busy prescribing team, at the heart of our patient care service. This role is offered on a part-time basis, for 22 hours per week working across 4 days.
 
The main responsibilities of the role include:
  • Understand the electronic prescribing system within the practice.
  •  Process repeat prescriptions on a daily basis, ensuring compliance with the practice protocol.
  • Handling weekly prescriptions for vulnerable patients and dealing with the queries related to these.
  • Ensure all prescriptions are signed by a GP, ready for collection within 48 hours from time of request and ready for daily collection by the local pharmacies.
  • Perform regular searches on drugs requiring monitoring, hence minimising the risk of adverse effects. Ensure all current medication has relevant, current authorisations.
  • Promote cost-effective prescribing at the practice through switching drugs to the generic preparation when appropriate and encouraging the use of local primary care trust formulary medication choices.
  • Deal with prescription queries from a range of healthcare professionals including; GPs, nurse prescribers, hospital outpatients/consultants, community pharmacists, community nursing staff, community matrons, carers, sheltered housing wardens, care homes as well as reception/administration staff at the practice.
  • Deal with medication changes from all hospital letters, removing old medication adding new or making dose changes with GP’s agreement and oversight documented in patient notes. Informing patients of changes where necessary and any review monitoring requirements.
  • Analyse SystmOne patient repeat prescription screens; taking off any repeat medication that is no longer required to ensure only current repeat medication is displayed.
  • Promote medication monitoring across the practice, by ensuring patients’ records are updated with medication review dates.
  • Ensure medication pack sizes are correct and amend where necessary.
  • Vigilantly check prescriptions and alert GPs to any mistakes, errors, or duplications due to sporadic SystmOne prescribing issues.
  • Where a patient has multiple repeat medications, adjust pack sizes to enable patient to order all medication at the same time, where possible.
 
About the Candidate

  • General practice experience and knowledge of SystmOne would be an advantage.
